Arctic Small Tool tradition

photo of a large tent ring

ASTt: This is a large Arctic Small Tool tradition (Pre-Dorset culture) tent ring (the ice pick in the photo is one meter long). The outer ring of rocks would have weighed down the edges of a tent. The internal space in a tent ring such as this is much less structured than in "mid-passage" tent rings. However, the patch of rich vegetation in the foreground indicates an area that was used as a midden, since the bones and food scraps that would have been deposited there have provided nutrients for the plants.
