Land and Sea

Coastline and sea ice

The Arctic Environment: During the winter and spring, the frozen ocean is continuous with the land. Due to fast-moving ocean currents, the ice in some locations consistently breaks up earlier in the summer—in this photo an example is seen in the distance, just under the engine. These locations, called polynyas, attract migrating birds and sea mammals, and were therefore very attractive to people as well.
