Finding and Excavating Sites

archaeologists writing notes while excavating

Fieldwork: When excavating any site, archaeologists generally spend less than half their time actually digging. A lot of the rest of the time is spent writing notes and drawing maps in order to document exactly what they observed and what they found at each stage in the excavation. It helps if it's a nice sunny day, like here. On cold rainy, windy or snowy days it's very difficult to produce legible notes.
