Magurei is a folk story in English and Nakanai from the Nakanai area of West New Britain. The story was collected by Ray and Marilyn Johnston and was published by the Summer Institute of Linguistics in October of 1972. At the time the language and cultural group were referred to as the Lakalai. Researchers with the Summer Institute of Linguistics now consider the term Nakanai to be more accurate. The story of Magurei is 32 pages long, is illustrated and includes a glossary. Odd numbered pages (3, 5, etc)are in the Nakanai language. Even numbered pages are in English. We have scanned the booklet in order to preserve the illustrations. Our thanks to Ray and Marilyn Johnston and to the Summer Institute of Linguistics for permission to post Magurei on this Website and to John Waltrowicz who sent us the booklet and to Steve Gallagher and Dan Shaw who helped us get permission to post the story here. The booklet consists of the text and a glossary of Nakanai terms. To start go first to the cover
