Upcoming Anthropology Events

Description of Annual Anthropology Department Events

Every year the Anthropology Department holds several events for students, alumni and friends. Upcoming events will be announced on this website, to classes, and posted around the department. After you read about the kinds of events we hold, check out our album of photos from past events.

Meet the Professors/How I Spent the Summer

The Student Anthropology Society always holds a number of social events of different kinds every year. One that is usually held in late September is an event in the Grad House or at a restaurant where Anthropology professors and students can get (re)acquainted and discuss the fieldwork and other activities that they participated in during the summer.

The Sally Weaver Scholarship Award Ceremony

This event is held in November and includes a guest speaker, a reception, and the presentation of the Sally Weaver Scholarship Award to the year's winner.  This award commemorates the accomplishments of Sally Weaver who was a member of the Department for 27 years.  The event is open to everyone.

The Silver Medal Award Ceremony

This event is held in late winter/early spring and celebrates the end of the academic year in general and the upcoming Anthropology graduates in particular.  The event includes a guest speaker, a reception, and the presentation of the Silver Medal Award for Academic Excellence in Anthropology to the year's winner.  The event is open to everyone.

Anthropology Honours Essay Presentations

The students who take ANTH 499A/B in order to research and write an Honours Essay each make an oral presentation of their research in February or March to an audience of the professors in the department, the other ANTH 499 students, and other students who wish to attend. Upcoming talks will be posted in the department and announced on this website. To see a list of the topics students have researched over the years, follow this link. Summer Fieldwork

Whenever possible, UW Anthropology professors attempt to involve students in their research. In recent years students have been able to take part in Maria Liston's work in Crete and Greece, and Robert Park's work in the Canadian Arctic. Many students have also been able to obtain archaeological fieldwork experience by taking archaeological fieldschools around the world, or by working for archaeological consulting companies here in Southern Ontario.

Special Events

When possible, guest speakers are brought to UW so that our students can be exposed to different areas of knowledge and different perspectives.
