Finding and Excavating Sites

Backfilling

Fieldwork: The last task in any excavation is backfilling, where the large pile of soil or gravel that has been painstaking excavated over days or weeks, plus all the rocks and boulders that have been moved, has to be put back into the excavation pit which is thus restored as nearly as possible to its appearance before the excavation. This is most archaeologists' least favourite chore.
